Akali Baba Deep Singh (1682-1757) is revered among Sikhs as one of the most hallowed martyrs in Sikhism and as a highly religious person. He is remembered for his sacrifice and devotion to the teachings of the Sikh Gurus. Baba Deep Singh was the first head of Misl Shaheedan Tarna Dal - an order of the Khalsa military established by Nawab Kapur Singh, the then head of Sharomani Panth Akali Buddha Dal.
Deep Singh Shaheed, is commonly known as Baba Deep Singh Shaheed as he was an elder of the Sikh Panth and was at least 75 years of age when he was Martyred on the Parkimaa or marble walkway on the edge of the the pool of nectar or sarovar of the Darbar Saheb or Golden Temple at Amritsar, Northern Punjab... The story of this extraordinary Saint, Warrior, and scholar begins in 1682 and his birth at Pahuwind, in the district of Amritsar and quickly moves to Deep Singh Shaheed coming into contact with the top Sikhs of the time including Bandhaa Singh Bahadur and Guru Gobind Singh, the 10th and final living Guru of the Sikhs and founder of the mighty KHALSA movement or PURE movement and Deep Singh Shaheed partook the Amrit or Sikh Khalsa Baptism ceremony from Guru Gobind Singh himself and who had taught Deep Singh Shaheed horse riding skills, weaponry and Sikh martial arts... When Sarbat Khalsa met on Vaisakhee day 1748 in Amritsar, the 65 groups or Jathaas were sorted out into 12 Misls or Sikh Khalsa Clans, for the twelve regions of Punjab, the land of the five waters... The word Misl is Arabic for Equal, and was deliberately used to show unity of all the Misls but when Deep Singh Shaheed was made the leader of the Shaheedan Misl, this Misl would be prominent and the most famous Misl because two of its leaders were Martyred ! Baba Deep Singh however is documented to be the only Human Being to have been decapitated and to have lived on ! This legend has never been contested by the Islamic rulers of Punjab and later, the British who were the last invaders of Punjab, who's entire Empire, the largest global empire in Human History ended in Punjab and near the site of the martyred Baba Deep Singh Shaheed...Baba Deep Singh Shaheed's body was cremated about 15 minutes walk from the spot of his Martyrdom at the Darbar Saheb or Golden Temple, and is called SHAHEEDGANJ GURUDWARA and this shrine to the memory of Baba Deep Singh Shaheed attracts up to two million devotees and faithful in a day on several days of the year and surpassing the numbers at the Darbar Saheb, which is officially the world's most visited place !!!
